Warts

Warts are caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). HPV has many subtypes and can appear in various parts of the body in many different forms, but by far, the most common location and presentation is on the hands and feet. All people are susceptible to infection with the virus that causes warts. Once a person has been exposed to the virus, there is no cure. Therefore, warts can recur once treated. Although warts present more of a nuisance than a danger, they can be embarrassing and may interfere with daily activities. Several different methods of destroying warts exist and different patients respond to them individually, with no one treatment being perfect for all. Some commonly used treatments for warts are:

  • Cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen

  • Salicylic acid

  • Lactic acid

  • Laser surgery

  • Candida antigen or PPD injections

  • Surgical excision

  • Certain compounded preparations
